Chapter 11

Everett had beaten them home by only one day. His unexpected trip to the south from the healer’s hut had taken longer than he’d anticipated to return. The arrival of so many men at the stronghold of the Dumerians was equally surprising to the WindWalkers, to say the least. They were however gracious hosts since most of the wounded had ended up being their own, once the guards had understood that they weren’t invading, of course. It was an interesting few days sorting out what had happened, negotiating for transportation, and rounding up enough supplies for everyone to head home. The leader of the Dumerian’s daughter, Rosaline, had headed up the care of the wounded with a military efficiency that most generals would be proud of. Her petite stature, masses of blonde curls and striking green eyes made Everett think too many people underestimated that one. There was a sharp wit hiding behind that pretty face.

As Everett traveled north, he witnessed a province that looked to have survived the war better than most. Most of the buildings remained intact and it seemed as if village life had returned back to normal. He wished he could have said the same of the Amerian lands. The transition was extreme as he journeyed north. What few villages and towns he came across looked deserted or destroyed, the people left too scared to come out. Lillanya hadn’t said one word on the ride back, preferring to ride in silence again. Given the eventfulness of their trip, Merrick was hardly surprised, but it seemed counter to her nature, this quiet she suffered. It was unsettling to say the least.

She handed the reins to Varus just as soberly as she had ridden, and with a murmured “good night,” tucked her head down to avoid any more attempts at discussion and went inside. All she wanted to do was sleep and soak in a tub, just maybe not in that order. Her mind was spinning in all directions. Aurelia’s words, her family in such disgrace, a potential resurgence of the darkness, finding her brother. She’d set out trying to find a way home and only ended up more problems than when she started. Why couldn’t it just have been easy?

For three days she barely left her chambers. Meesa left food at the door, but Lillanya didn’t really want it. She sat in her tub, drowning her misery in water smelling of hazelnut and vanilla, hoping the world would just disappear. Her brain
